IBAS Panel Member Kevin Pullein reflects on how the dramatic twist to the 2025/26 Championship play-offs affected three clubs and many more bettors.
IBAS Approached by Rule-Comparison Initiative
By Jim Cremin
ONE of the themes IBAS has encountered consistency since it was first established is the question of why what appears to be the same bet is settled differently by one bookmaker compared to another. Some markets are settled identically by practically every company, but others vary significantly.
Rules can also change from time to time and so it is always best to check before you bet if you are in any doubt about the approach your chosen bookmaker chooses to use.
Sports Betting Rules Comparison Site
We were contacted recently by representatives of a website which is aiming to provide a comparison tool for the way that sportsbook rules differ, by placing the rules of selected companies side by side under headings showing the bet type or market in question.
Anyone seeking some basic guidance on betting and the various often differing rules which can apply company-to-company could consider visiting the BetOwl site.
Not connected to IBAS, they have approached us to explain they are an independent UK betting information site: “We have reviewed 93 publicly available settlement-rule combinations across 12 major bookmaker brands, backed by 52 distinct first-party UK help and rules pages. The index covers void accumulator legs, Bet Builders, player non-starters, postponed and abandoned matches, Rule 4, dead heats and Cash Out.
“The aim is to help a bettor identify the relevant published rule before deciding whether a settlement needs querying.”
The index is here:

Established and overseen by Rob O’Shea, he adds: “BetOwl also has a small group of specialist contributors covering areas including racing, bloodstock, football, golf and US sports.
“Technical and research tools, including AI-assisted tools, are used to help organise information and operate the website. Important factual and editorial work is checked and approved by people before publication.
“The longer-term aim is to build BetOwl into a trusted and clearly written betting reference resource. This includes settlement rules, calculators, betting education, racecourse information, responsible gambling guidance and independent analysis. The core educational and consumer-reference material is intended to remain freely available.”
