Impartial Decisions

At IBAS, we have a unique heritage. We were founded by journalists from the Sporting Life newspaper in the 1990s and several of our adjudicators are current or former journalists.

Along with them, we also have experts in dispute resolution and the gambling industry.

Our team of adjudicators bring their expertise, clear writing skills, and a passion for getting to the root of every dispute to the table.

We take pride in providing a fair and impartial service, keeping up with relevant legal developments in the gambling world, and approaching disputes like a judge, but with a stronger focus on fairness and an understanding of the principles of gambling.

HOW IS IBAS FUNDED?

We are often asked about our funding, and if it affects our impartiality. The truth is, all complaint handling services, including IBAS, are funded by the industries or companies whose complaints they handle. This includes the Financial Ombudsman for bank complaints, the Rail Ombudsman for train complaints, and the Property Ombudsman for landlord complaints.

IBAS is funded through subscriptions from registered operators listed in our directory. These fees cover the cost of providing our service for the year ahead and are not based on results or outcomes. The fees paid by gambling businesses can be viewed in the “Operators” section of our website.

The members of our Adjudication Panel who make the final decisions on disputes are contracted and paid by IBAS and receive no payment from betting businesses. We have a thorough process in place to ensure that all Panel members do not have any conflicts of interest.

We have never been threatened with non-payment or offered any financial incentives by a business to reach a certain decision in our 25-year history. If any business attempted to do so, they would be deregistered from our service and the matter reported to the appropriate regulatory authority.
