IBAS statement on the anniversary of UK gambling review
One year ago, the government laid out a vision for the future of gambling regulation, highlighting the need for enhanced consumer protection through a Gambling Ombudsman. As we reflect on this milestone, IBAS is ready to partner with the government and industry stakeholders to achieve this vital goal. We are ready to step into the Ombudsman role with a robust consumer focused plan, pending the support of key stakeholders and agreement of an appropriate funding model.
The push for an Ombudsman signals a shared dedication to safeguarding consumers, addressing social responsibility and gambling harm concerns. With decades of experience as a trusted independent adjudicator in the gambling sector, IBAS is uniquely positioned to lend its expertise to establish a robust and independent body.
We acknowledge the various viewpoints on the Ombudsman creation and recognise the importance of incorporating feedback for its effectiveness. However, individuals with disputes against gambling operators must have access to fair and impartial dispute resolution—a need currently unmet.
IBAS firmly believes our extensive knowledge and track record in handling consumer complaints establishes us as thought leaders in shaping the Ombudsman’s framework. With over 90,000 formal adjudications and a wealth of informal advice, we are ready and eager to support the development of an Ombudsman capable of delivering clear, consistent and timely resolutions to consumer complaints.
The IBAS Board, free from gambling operator influence, is dedicated to maintaining its independence while working collaboratively to establish a respected Gambling Ombudsman, ensuring that gambling consumers receive the support they deserve without undue delay.
